B. Talibov

Professor Bukar Talibov, the outstanding scholar of Dagestan, oldest employee of G. Tsadasi Institute of language, literature and art, doctor of philological sciences, honoured scholar of Daghestan has passed away after short illness in September 13, 2003 on 76 year of life.

Talibov was born in 1928 in the village Akhti. Upon finishing Derbenti pedagogical school 1947, Talibov continued his studies at the Faculty of Oriental Studies of Leningrad State University, specializing in Caucasian philology. In 1952-1955 he passed a postgraduate course in the Institute of linguistics in Moscow. After the defending of the candidate dissertation in 1955 became the scientific employee of the same institute. In 1958 by the request of a management of the Dagestan branch Talibov passed to G. Tsadasi Institute of language, literature and art and worked there till the end of his life.

Talibov was one of the conducting experts in the Dagestan linguistics and made a solid contribution to development of a philological science in republic. Talibov investigated the nonscripted languages of Daghestan and a white stain on a linguistic card of Dagestan.

The important place in scientific researches of the scholar was occupied by questions of historical phonetics of the Dagestan languages. His monograph on comparative phonetics of Lezgian languages has received a wide recognition among caucasologists.

Especially important was his researches on Lezghian lexicography. Talibov in the co-authorship with M. Gadzhiev has issued one of the first large Daghestanian-Russian dictionaries "The Lezgian-Russian dictionary", took part in drawing up of new "Russian-Lezgian dictionary".

In a number of such works the special place occupies "The explanatory Dictionary of Lezgian language" made with participation of U. Meilanova. During the last years Talibov worked on the new "Lezgian-Russian dictionary ", and shortly before death has finished and has sent for publishing the monograph "Budukh language ".

The name of Bukar Talibov - a major scholar, teacher, public figure - will live forever in the memory of his friends, numerous colleagues and pupils.
