The Influence of Duration of the Chronic Disease on the Patient's Personal traits

Chronic disease has an important impact on the patients' whole life and personality. The question is whether organic features of chronic disease influence on personality and emotional changes. Are there differences in adaptation strategies toward different diseases?

Type of reaction on disease, style of interpersonal relations and level of depression of 47 patients with temporal epilepsy and 31 patient with coronal heart disease were investigated. LOBI (Bekhterev questionnaire for chronic disease), Beck Depression Scale, Leary Interpersonal Relation's Test were used. Resultes showed that perosnality and emotioanl changes mostly depend on spesific features of chronic disease. Namely, these changes don't influenced by chronic duration of disease, but depend on the perceived results of the disease, which may be stigma, danger for life, prospective constraints in everyday activites. It revealed that factor of gender is important in patient's emotional condition and in reaction type on disease. When consulting patients, it's crucial to take into account patient's reaction type on disease and gender.
