On the Issue of Adoption of Christianity in Khevi

The north border of Georgia is represented by the most beautiful mountainous region of Khevi. The authorities have been focusing special attention to this region, as an object of strategic importance, not only from the political, but also from the religious point of view, since, often, the religious firmness constituted one of the factors, which determined the unity and strength of the country.

In spite of lack of sources, conversion of Khevi to Christianity should have been carried out, on the stage-by-stage basis, in the immediate future upon announcement of Christianity as the state religion in East Georgia. The foundation of conversion of Khevi to Christianity was laid in the period of reign of Bakar – son of the King Mirian. Strengthening of religion and final adoption of Christianity must have been connected with the Tsilkani Episcopacy.
