Some Features of Medieval Georgian and Armenian Architecture

The paper demonstrates features of the development of a type of Medieval Georgian and Armenian architecture, the "Kuppel-Halle". It is established that this type came into existence in both countries independently and developed in different directions. In Georgia two varieties of the type, simple and complex, are attested at the very first stage of its development, existing in parallel in subsequent periods too. In Armenia the simple "Kuppel-Halle" was derived from the complex variety, spreading only from the 11th century. Each specimen constructed on this theme in Georgia is an individual creation, in contrast to Armenia, where the "Kuppel-Halle" churches are characterised by consistent observance of typical features. All this, along with a number of other peculiarities, shows that the local artistic environment determined the original form of architecture of each country.
