The Problem of Church Mode in "The Canon of Repentance" by St. Andrew the Cretes

The issues connected with church 8 modes system don't lose their actuality regarding to any direction of church music resserch processes. The mode seems to be complex category. It is vividly seen in studying heirmoses after St. Andrew of Crete's "The Canon of repentance". After three centuries of its creation, in the shortest period of time, three different translations were made by the outstanding Georgian acclesiastic figures Euthymius (955-1038) and George (1009-1065) the Athonites and Arsen the Monk (11th-12th centuries). Besides comparing with the original, the Georgin versions of the three Greek texts have shown characteristics of the church modes of that time. The aim of this research is to identify the importance of 8 modes in Georgian church practice.
