On Two Versions of the "Abesalom and Eteri" According to Soliko Virsaladze's Scenography

Soliko Virsaladze's creations represent an important stage in the history of the Georgian and Soviet scenography of the 20th century. Numerous opera and ballet performances were designed by him both in Georgia and abroad (on the scenes of Moscow, St. Petersburg and other towns).

The paper deals with the scenography of Z. Paliashvili's opera Abesalom and Eteri staged in 1956 (by M. Tumanishvili) and in 1971 (by G. Meliva) made by him at the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theatre. On the basis of the sketches, photographic material, media and small research data came down to us, it is possible to imagine in general the real scenes of these performances. This gives us the opportunity to judge not only on creative features of the artist but also on general regularities characteristic for Georgian theatrical-decorative art of that period on the example of opera performances. Both versions of Abesalom and Eteri offered by Soliko Virsaladze belong to the most significant phenomena of Georgian culture of not so far past.
