Towards the Origin of the Ioane of Athonite

The question on an origin of one of the founders of the monastery on the Mount Athos – Ioane (in the world Tornike) is considered in the article. The Belgian orientalist and expert of the Old Georgian sources Peeters being based on one detail from the "Life of Ioane and Euthimius" by Giorgi of Athonite, has come to conclusion, that Ioane-Tornike was the aristocrat of the Armenian origin. This idea was completely divided by well-known Armenian researcher N. Adonts, the additional argument was the inscription on the stone cross of the 11th century which in scholar's opinion was made by Ioane-Tornike. The certificates of historical sources resulted in clause and opinions of some known researchers on this question deny a hypothesis of both scientists. Hence, there is no basis to doubt of Ioane's Georgian origin.
