The aim of this article is to analyze the ornament that attracted our attention in Tbeti temple- situated in Shavsheti (modern North Turkey) which is considered the ancient Georgian land and is historic. The temple was founded in the X century and its supporter and protector was Ashot Eristavi. During XI and XIV centuries the ancient layer was added to. On the eastern facade of the temple which is in better condition than the rest of the building, during our expedition in Shavsheti and Klarejeti (October 4-8, 2003) we discovered an unusual ornament, that had never been mentioned by scientists. The above mentioned ornament is situated in the lower corner of the eastern facade and represents a cross carved inside 'David's Star'. The identical ornament can be seen in the small arch of the southern part of the temple. There is no doubt that this ornament – repeated twice in Tbeti temple contains some important information. The similar symbol-a big cross with a star like ornaments in the upper wings (on the right and left side) has been preserved on the secular building of Artaani (Ardagani) Castle. We think that this ornament has double meaning and expresses: 1) the unity of the Old and New Testaments 2) the theory according to which the Bagrationi Dynasty of Georgian kings descended from biblical David. This theory was shared by St. father Grigol Khandzteli, the initiator of monastic activities in Tao-Klarjeti and Shavsheti.
Grigol Khandzteli was one of the first to testify the above mentioned legend. This grate representative of Georgian church has done a lot of strengthen the Bagrationi Dynasty. The idea that Bagrationi were biblical David's descendants was popular among Grigol's successors as well. Those who built and restored the Tbeti temple belong to the same section of society.
