The Form-Shaping and Expressive Functions of Meter in the Symphonies of A. Balanchivadze

The article, by means of analysis of Andria Dalanchivadzc's four symphonies, reviews the contextual-expressive and form-shaping functions of a musical meter. The Author focuses on following issues: in the process of developing musical theme variation of size in certain section of form, in particular in the beginning, middle, climax and final structures.

Metric modulations appear in the process of intra-lhemaric development, dabon-uive stage, through figurative transformation of certain variations. Metric comparisons arc based on contrasting thematic expressions, in junction with genre conversion by emphasis on internal structures of the form.

In the process of form, functional role of metric deviation is also important. With regard to the form-shaping, metric cadaneing is used as well. Through metric transformation of the theme figurative-emotional transformation is achieved as in different parts of the cycle, so vvilhin each part.

Polymelncs is presented as a creative factor for form-shaping, and poiyrythmies is demonstrated in expressive sphere.
