Metaphor at the Cross Point of Cognitive Semantics and Pragmatics

The article refers that semantics consider metaphor as the foundation of thinking and the key of mental imagination.

The ability of human is demonstrated in the metaphor. It includes diving the individual events. Then the human establishes likeness among them – in most cases it is the synthesis of concrete and abstract events. Our cognitive system is mostly metaphoric but our thinking, feelings and daily actions are defined by metaphor.

Semantic approach discusses metaphor without context. Pragmatic element is left out. Frequently the part of meaning depends on the pragmatic context which explains its essence. Sometimes it radically changes its meaning.

According to this article metaphor is the research object not only for semantics but for pragmatics as well.

While investigating the metaphors we use three-layered model. On the first, explicit layer the metaphorical form is fixed and on the second layer- the contextual meaning and pragmatical component of the metaphor. On the third layer the part of the model of universe is actualized. This part of universe includes the knowledge of two layers of metaphor.

The above-mentioned three layered model helps us to acknowledge the essence of the metaphor.
