"The life of Serapion Zarzmeli" by Basil Zarzmeli describes the history of foundation and development of monastic life in Samtskhe-Javakheti, namely in Kvabliani gorge in VIII – IX centuries. The monument, mentioned above, is worth of paying attention in terms of different issues, the most important of them we believe is the artistic approach in terms of vivid showing of the protagonist and also original realization of monastic life, which makes the monument completely different from the other hagiographic compositions. Against the background of the monastic construction the spiritual preparation of person for passing the too complicated way is highlighted in the composition. This way is the bridge from the first steps of the cleric to the high priest. This way is hierarchical and the holy fathers achieving of the highest step of it requires their getting over any of the obstacles. During proceeding the complicated way that is called the way of the saint is shown here. This is the way of patience, obedience and modesty. It must examine the pupil and grow up him as the real priest.
After his great priest Mikel Parekheli spiritually trained Serapion, it was necessary to examine him by means of that hard and "thorny" way that is called the secular way. The protagonists searching the spiritual light are examined at that way. And the artistic realization of the protagonist by the author himself is shown in such a way that he highlights his own word about that – what is the pilgrimage character of the holy fathers and their trials at that way, how they grow spiritually by means of such tortures. That is why Basil Zarzmeli describes each step of the protagonist in details. Getting over the main way shows the physical as well as spiritual strength of Serapion. More the way complicates the harder is the physical torture of the characters. Just it is the signal of the spiritual victory: the protagonist presented with non-human, tortured face, with chaps, wounds on the body and with the torn clothes is the saint who has achieved the highest spiritual perfection.
