The Problem of the Georgianization of the Distance Learning System "Moodle" and its Solution by Changing the "Open Source" Code

In the given article are considered the basic opportunities of the distance educational systems based on "open code", including the system Moodle. All Involved systems are divided in two major groups: first one consists from the content and learning management systems, which are free and there is no legal restrictions to change, use and distribute its source code. The second are programs, which could be free, but their source code is closed. Both systems have their own advantages and disadvantages, which are essential while making the decision which one to choose. Taking in to the consideration the present reality in which the Georgian distance learning portal will be functioning, we came to conclusion that using the Open Source GPL licensed product will be preferable in many cases. Using any Closed Source products would not be possible solving the problem of the adopting to the Georgian Language, like we had, while working on creation of distance learning portal "Sabas Madli". Attention of working group drew to the "Open Source" CMS Moodle. Moodle is a learning system which is used in 120 countries and translated up to 60 languages. This system has a big army of the professionals who constantly are working on program improvement. Distance Education Center of Tbilisi Orbeliani State Pedagogical University runs their portal "Sabas Madli", using system Moodle (http://dec.saba.edu.ge/moodle). There are several complete educational courses there. Some of the courses are in the stage of development.
