Sadakhlo battle on the whole, speaking of the military-tactical maneuver, is one of the most interesting battles of the Armenian-Georgian War, taking place on December 18-23 of 1918.
From December 9 of 1918 the unexpected regulars and combat bands of the Dashnak Armenia on the teritory of the Georgian Democratic Republic were advancing successfully to the depth of Georgia, and General Tsulukidze's thin Georgian garnison (totally 600 men and two armored trains) incurred heavy losses in cutthroat fights and retreated on the area of Uzunliar-Sanain-Alaverdi along the railway Tiflis-Alexandropol. On the December 17 the Georgian units fighting broke through the encirclement in the region of Alavrdi-Akhtala and retreated for the Sadakhlo station. Here the thin and outworn Georgian units (only one deficient battalion and one armored train of support) organized a defencive line with 12 km width. (Abreast rifle regiment,s bylow). On the basis of inconvertible archive datas we established that in Sadakhlo region fights of Georgian side was confronted by the Armenian unit at minimum six times outnumbering the Georgian unit. From the 18th of December to the 23rd in Sadakhlo Region cutthroat fights overgrowing to to hand-to-hand ones were taking place. A great support for the Armenian regulars in sabotage-subversive activities became and played an important role the region's Armenian population poisoned by the Dashnak ultra-nationalistic ideology, that population were once sheltered as refugees by the Georgian people. In spite of all the mentioned factors during Sadakhlo fights completely beasted Georgian units successfully acted on the defencive and inflicted losses to the oponent. So, on December 18, during the first battle in han-to-hand fighting the combat advance-guard of the Armenian unit was completely destroyed and that temporarily stoped the Armenian forces, advance in that direction. From December 20 the Armenian units constantly stormed the Geoergian units defencive positions, but every time they were successfully counterattacked by the Gergian side. Eventually, by night of the 22rd of December completely beasted and exhausted Georgian subdivisions had to leave the strategic point of Sadakhlo and change disposition. At the supreme moment General Tsulukidze signed the battle order about retreat and the encirclement breakthrough, which is proved by appropriate archive data. It should be especially mentioned, that the tactical retreat of the Georgian units was organized in a strict accordance with the battle order and not in a stampede as it is presented by some Armenian and pro-Armenian authors.
Sadakhlo battle of December 18-23 of 1918 of the Armenian-Georgian War is one of the unknown pages of the Newer History and the War History of Georgia. From the point of view of cohort tactics it was a series of cutthroat defencive fights of the Georgian side in which once more Georgian cohorts showed glorious military traditions and high combat moral of the nation. During several overmatching them, which helped to gain the time which the Georgian side was short of for forcing of mobilization matters and maneuvering in the area of the combat actions. And the breakthrough of the Sadakhlo encirclement with comparatively small losses is one of the brilliant examples of the mentioned meneuver from Georgia's War History.
