The Last Bodbeli – Ioane Maqashvili during the Rusificatory Regime in Georgia

(1795-1837)

The article deals with the significance of an Eparchy and Archbishop of the Orthodox church in general. On the example of Bodbe Eparchy and the Bishop of Bodbe is defined its functions. Specifically, it deals with the activities of Archbishop of Bodbe (Maqashvili) on a view of the regime of rusification in Georgia.

Based on the archive materials, the research work studies one fragment of the history of Bodbe Eparchy in 10-30's of the 19th century, when, as a result of reforms by the Russian Orthodox church it suffers from permanent reorganizations and at the end of the 40's ceases its existence.

In the work is given the activities of Bodbe last Metropolitan Ioane on political, religious and cultural spheres in the context of the rusificatory regime in Georgia; is described his invaluable role in the history of Georgian church for protection and survival of Georgian culture.
