For gaining of hegemony over the Caucasian Region, within the centuries the interests of Russia, Turkey and Iran had been colliding. Authorities of Turkey and Iran were trying to strengthen treir own influence in this region through the help and support of the Muslim population of the Caucasus. As an opposition, in the future plans of Russia special place was given to the problem of christening of the native population of Caucasia, for achievement of which the Tsar's officers, together with the other means, were planning foundation of a wide net of a religious mission.

The tsarist Russia began development of religious policy in Caucasia from attempts of christening of the Ossetian population.
