Code-switching is an area, which is not well studied in Georgian linguistics because of the traditional negative attitude to this phenomenon by the Soviet scholars. But the fact is that code-switching remains a frequent appearance in Georgian reality and is worth studying properly.

In this article you will find theoretical preliminaries to this topic and the exposure of types, functions and (non-)linguistical reasons of code-switching in Georgian with examples mainly from Georgian-Russian and Georgian-German code-switching.

The article deals with the linguistic material and observes the main conversational functions of code-switching: different types of connotation, euphemism, filling lexical gaps and simplification.
