The Collision of Hellenic and Christiancultures in D. Merezhkovski's early creation.

("Julian the Apostate")

In this article is analyzed one of the most monumental historical novels of D. Merezhkovski "Julian the Apostate", in which had found the direct reflection the ideas of two polar religious cults – pagan and Christian. The struggle between Messiah and antichrist is presented on example of these two opposed religions, but Merezhkovski not only draws together these two comprehensions, but also sometimes equates them between themselves.

The author also pays a special attention to romantic of outgoing pagan civilization, but underlines the cogency of Christ's victory in struggle for possession of world. In this article is mentioned the so-called "theory of balance", piercing almost the whole prosaic creation of D. Merezhkovski, which also plays a role of final accord in novel "Julian the Apostate".

This literary work and its reminiscences are analyzed in sense interrelationship with the text of Saint John's Apocalypse, because the apocalyptical motives play an important role in creativity of Russian decadent. Also it is paid a special attention to symbolic attributes of these opposite cults, which is the illustrative addition in novel.
