The article considers contents, expressive and form-creating functions of the third symphony by Andria Balanchivadze. The author attaches most of his attention to the musical theme as a phenomenon of the drama category, which is grounded on the contents genre and emotional and stylistic expression. He has considered basic and theme materials development ways, mutual connections and confrontation.

Development of themes is characterized by sophistical versatility, in development stages there are polyphonic aids too. Internal changeability of some themes creates several grades of the renewed kind.

Leading compositional importance in the process of the form development there is determined the drama expediency of the light theme and light function, which is expressed in all parts of the symphony. Therefore, there is created a transient development, which is a unifying axe the whole symphony cycle.
