The Words Contractions in Contemporary Jewish Language

One can find lots of word contractions in contemporary Jewish language. They are frequently mentioned in religious texts, periodicals or documents. Frequency of occurrence of this linguistic feature is so high, that it can be considered as one of the defining factors of general stylistic pattern of contemporary Jewish language. Contractions are transformed into other independent words, requiring new meanings.

In Jewish language there is no special term designating contractions. Word contractions are now and then encountered in Mishnah and Talmud. Contracted forms in Kabala used to carry mystical and symbolic meanings. In order to make it easy to pronounce contractions, vowel marks are attached to them.

Lots of contractions were worked out during contemporary Jewish language restoration development process. Most of them represent contracted titles of institutions, organizations or parties.
