Historians refer the appearance of the Universities to the medieval Europe as to the twelfth – century Renaissance. Universities – Studium generale – were the guilds of scientific magistrates. Many traditions of the medieval universities are still in practice. Among these - the tradition of gaining the Scientific degrees. The article reviews the history of scientific degrees. The first doctor's degree was introduced in Bologna, 1130 (Doctor of Law). The doctor's degree of Divinity, was introduced in Paris, 1231. The first doctor's degree of Medicine was introduced in the XIV c.
