Theatre at Caravanserai

According to the plan of the architect J. Skudieri, so called theatre at caravanserai has been built in Tbilisi 1847-1851. The interior of the theatre has been made up by the artist Gr. Gagarin.

Located on the central square of city and being one of the most beautiful building of the 19th century Tbilisi architecture, it was burned down in 1874.

Arcitects and builders applied the experience of the European theatrical architecture – type of so called circle theatre with deep stage-box.

The facades of theatre have been constructed in the spirit of Russian Classicism. Whereas, in spectator's hall typical for caravanserais the Eastern (Iranian) architectural motivs have prevailed.

Theatre at caravanserai expresses the general eclectic tendencies of European and Russian arcitectures of the 19th century.

It is also remarkable, that at this well-known theatre the Italian opera, Georgian drama, Russian drama and ballet worked simultaneously.
