Distinguished Scholar and Public Figure

Academician George Tsitsishvili is 80 years old. He was born in Tbilisi 1922. He is the author of several books, monographs, separate works considering the problems of the theory of literature, the analysis of literary processes of the Georgian literature of the different periods, problems of the literary criticism, the theory and a history of literary relationships, the theoretical questions of theatre and theater science.

Tsitsishvili graduated from Iv. Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University and the State Polytechnic Institute, also the Baku Artillery School. Since 1953 he has worked in Shota Rustaveli Institute of the Georgian Literature. He was the scientific secretary, head of the department, the deputy director and the director of this institute. In 1988-2002 he was academician-secretary of the Department of language and literature Georgian Academy of Sciences.

Teaching was an organic part of Tsitsishvili's life. He shared his vast knowledge with his students and postgraduates at the Tbilisi State University, Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani Tbilisi Pedagogical University, Shota Rustaveli Tbilisi Theatre Institute. Tsitsishvili was the Chairman of the Union of Writers of Georgia, the editor of magazines "Literarturnaya Grusia" and "Matsne".

In 1941-45 he participated in the Second World War. Tsitsishvili was at war at defense of Moscow and at break of blockade of Leningrad. He was at war on the Volkhov, Karelian and the Third Belorusian fronts. Nowadays he is the Chairman of the State Department on affairs of veterans.

It is necessary to note Tsitsishvili's activity as a writer. His novels "The Love in Time of Bloody Rains" and "Overcome Your Avidity" have brought to the author the readers' recognition.

Tsitsishvili is a bearer of the Order of Merit. He is decorated with the Ivane Javakhishvili Medal of Tbilisi State University and is awarded the Order of Vakhtang Gorgasali of the First Degree.

The editorial board of the journal "Caucasian Messenger" congratulates the outstanding scholar with this famous jubilee and wishes following scholarly and creative success.
