Confromtation of Political Powers and the Batumi Problem
in 1918-1920

Most important question in the history of Georgian Democratic Republic was the problem of Adjara. In 1918-1921 Adjara became the object of interest between the powerful countries (Great Britain, Russia and Turkey). First the Ottoman Empire and then Great Britain occupied Batumi and Batumi district and this territory became the arena of confrontation of various political powers.

After the English armies entrance in this region relations became more strained. They didn't oppose the Russian and pro-Turkish organizations activity in Batumi.

In spite of this situation the national movement in Batumi was very strong. On June 28, 1920 representatives allies and Georgian government signed the agreement, under which the army left Batumi. On 7th of July, Batumi district was returned to Georgia.
