Midznadzori was one of the monasteries founded or renewed by famous Georgian ecclesiastic St. Gregory of Khandzta (Grigol Khandzteli) and his disciples in historic Klarjeti (at present in Turkey). The monastery in Midznadzori was built around 830 by "the great father" David. A ruined church and small remnants of some other structures have remained in the monastery.
Data from N. Marr’s 1904 traveling dairy make possible to reconstruct an architectural composition of the church. It is a croix semilibre structure with an elongated nave. Judging by plan and building technique the church dates from the ninth century. Presumably, it is an initial church of the monastery. In the tenth century it was rebuilt and adorned by carved ornaments. Fragments of the adornment can be seen in the modern constructions of villagers.
