International Standard Numbers

International Standard Numbers are unique codes used by publishers, libraries and suppliers to identify published monographs, serials and music.

ISBN - International Standard Book Number.

ISBN assigned to books, pamphlets, educational kits, microforms, CD-ROMs and other digital and electronic publications.

ISBN come in two styles, containing 10 digits or 13 digits.

ISBN-10 - 10 digit numbers. The last symbol can be "X".

Examples: 9984-9275-9-8 or 9984927598

ISBN-13 - 13 digit numbers that start with 978 or 979.
Exception is prefix 979-0, it is reserved for ISMN.

Examples: 978-99928-61-26-4 or 9789992861264

Since 1 January 2007 the ISBN was defined as a 13-digit, beginning with prefixes 978- or 979-. The exception is prefix 979-0, it is reserved for ISMN. The format is compatible with EAN-13.

ISSN - International Standard Serial Number.

ISSN assigned to serial publications.

8 digit numbers. The last symbol can be "X".

Examples: 1063-7710 or 10637710

- ISSN International Centre

ISMN - International Standard Music Number.

ISMN assigned to printed music publications.

ISMN come in two styles, containing 10 digits or 13 digits.

ISMN-10 - 10 digit numbers. The first symbol must be "M".

Examples: M-2306-7118-7 or M230671187

ISMN-13 - 13 digit numbers that start with 979-0.

Examples: 979-0-060-11561-5 or 9790060115615

Since 1 January 2008 the ISMN was defined as a 13 digit, beginning with prefix 979-0, where the zero replaced M in the old-style number. The format is compatible with EAN-13.
