A Georgian wrestler David Tsimakuridze became the first Georgian champion in freestyle wrestling (in 79 kg weight category) at the Olympic Games in Helsinki, in 1952. The team from USSR was led by a Georgian trainer Vakhtang Kukhianidze. David Tsimakuridze won the championship of the USSR seven times.
