1969-85 Gonashvili worked for the folk ensemble Rustavi (director Anzor Erkomaishvili). He was a very successful performer of both Western and Eastern Georgian folk songs, chants, as well as of the narrator’s part in Megrelian and Abkhazian songs.
His repertoire was extensive. He also sang the songs by Georgian composers. His work was inspired by the Georgian folklore and, at the same time, is a synthesis of Georgian and Western European classical music esthetics. He tragically died at the young age.
One of Tbilisi’s streets is named after Hamlet Gonashvili.
