15 August – Alexandre Abasheli (Isak Chochia) was born

Alexandre Abasheli (his real surname was Chochia) was a famous Georgian poet. He was born in 1884. In 1909 he began to work in the newspapers Kavkaz and Novaia Rech; he also worked in the publishing houses Dila and Tsisartkela.

10 July – Revaz Lagidze was born

Revaz Lagidze, a popular Georgian composer, was born in the village of Bagdati in 1921. In 1939, Lagidze graduated from Tbilisi Musical College 4 (class of violin). In 1941-49, he was a violinist in Georgian Symphonic Orchestra. In 1948,

11 July – Petre Melikishvili was born

Petre Melikishvili graduated from Novorossiya University, Faculty of Physics and Mathematics in 1872. In 1876, Melikishvili began to work in the chemical laboratory of Novorossiya University. Later, he became a professor in the same university (1885-1917), and Head of the Chair of Organic Chemistry (1918-27). His works in organic chemistry were crucial for developing the stereochemical theory. Melikishvili discovered glycide acids, one of the organic chemical compound classes.

14 July - Nodar Dumbadze was born

Nodar Dumbadze, one of the most popular Georgian writers, was born in Tbilisi in 1928. He had a very light-hearted childhood, but it didn’t last long. He was 9-10 years old when he lost his parents and moved to the village of Khidistavi, Guria region. He returned to Tbilisi to study in Tbilisi State University, Faculty of Economics. Having graduated from the university, he began to work for the Tsiskari magazine.

15 July – Ietim Gurji was born

A famous Georgian ashug (folk poet and singer) Ietim Gurji (Ietim Dabgashvili) was born to the family of a poor artisan (forester) Dabagi in Tbilisi, in 1875. His ancestors were Georgians; they were kidnapped by Turks during the war. They converted to Islam and were named Gurji (Georgians).

17 July – Akaki Tsereteli’s journey to Racha Lechkhumi began

On 17 July, 1912, there was a strange scene in the “Garden of Eden”, in the centre of Tiflis. Under a big asp, at the table were gathered people living in Tiflis, but originating from Racha-Lechkhumi (one of the Georgian regions). The fest was dedicated to a poet Akaki Tsereteli who was going to take a journey to Racha-Lechkhumi.

20 June - Valerian Sidamon-Eristavi was born

Valerian Sidamon-Eristavi studied painting at the private studio. His teachers were A. Mrevlishvili and B. Vogell. 1909-15 he was learning at Moscow Institute of Fine Arts and Architecture.

20 July - Sofrom Mgaloblishvili was born

Sofrom Mgaloblishvili was born in the village of Derbi, Kareli district, in 1851. In 1867, he finished Gori Clerical School, where he himself worked later; he graduated from Tbilisi Clerical Seminary in 1873. In 1893-1897, he worked at the eparchy administration in Poti. In 1897–1910, he was a clerical synod office clerk.

24 July – Alexandre Dumas was born

On 1 December, 1858, Alexandre Dumas and a French painter Jean-Pierre Moinet visited Tbilisi. It was two o’clock p.m. when our cabman showed us the blue-colored steam, in what we hardly noticed several small white points. “There is Tbilisi there”, he told us. I was so surprised if someone had told me: That is Saturn, this is Mercury”.

31 July – Robert Sturua was born

Robert Sturua is a Georgian theatre director. He is the most prominent producer of the modern Georgian theatre and cinema. He was born to the family of the famous Georgian painter, Robert Sturua in Tbilisi, in 1938. He graduated from Tbilisi Theatre Institute, Faculty of Film Directing. In 1962, he began to work at Shota Rustaveli State Theatre. Since 1979, he has been the leading director at the theatre and, since 1980, its Creative Director.
