ARTSTOR updated collection for the National Library Readers
 04/10/2023

ARTSTOR has renewed its collection for our readers. From October 4th to December 31st, the updated digital art library collection is available for our readers.

Artstor is the most extensive image resource with more than 2 million images from top museums, archives, scholars, and artists - all rights-cleared for education and research - and provide tools for teaching and learning with visual materials. In the late 1990s, when universities and libraries began to create digital libraries, the organization Artstor was created at the request of educational organizations and library patrons to share digital images. ARTSTOR's concept was to avoid the need for readers to search and scan the same material multiple times from different repositories, save their resources and make it available for educational purposes.

Initiated by a non-governmental organization, combining images and the latest online technologies, and funded by the Mellon Foundation, this digital library was collaboratively created by museums, universities, and art organizations.

The database encompasses works from different periods and cultures, employing various technologies for image study and teaching. Currently, 1,500 organizations from 45 countries utilize this digital library. The archives and works of renowned museums, photo archives, libraries, artists, scientists, and photographers are accessible, including the Magnum Photographic Archive, the Carnegie Endowment for the Arts, the Gallery of Modern Art (MoMA), the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Bodleian Library, and collections from other organizations.

The Artstor database undergoes regular updates and includes collections from institutions such as Bard College, Colby College, Yale, Harvard, New York University, the Association of Architectural Historians, the University of Illinois, Middlebury, and Miami, as well as curated collection albums. Materials can be downloaded and distributed solely for educational and non-commercial purposes.
