Archives of Georgian Dissents, Alexander Manvelishvili and Valery Chalidze gifted to the National Library
 11/07/2019

Today, the National Parliamentary Library of Georgia received two precious archives from the USA. Alexander Manvelishvili (1904-1997) and Valery Chalidze (1938-2018) were two dissents and public figures, who were forced to leave the homeland and emigrate in the foreign country during two different periods of the Soviet regime. Both archives fully represent the private library, personal interest and working materials of their owners.

It worth to mention, that Alexander Manvelishvili and Valery Chalidze never stopped to work for the freedom of their society even in emigration. Both public persons were famous for their dissent work: Alexander Manvelishvili was a leader of the Georgian emigration and editor in Chief of Georgian publications for emigrants; Valery Chalidze was working on materials for the defense of Human Rights in all soviet republics, he founded his own publishing to bring more light to the lives of soviet citizens. Georgian Independence is the result of their uninterrupted work too.

The archives, 985 Kilo both, were received as a gift of their families to our library. The preparation for archive transportation begun in January, 2019, when representatives of the National Library, Giorgi Kekelidze, Levan Taktakishvili and Maia Simonishvili visited the families of both emigrants in the USA.

The National Parliamentary Library is very thankful to Peter Manvel and Lisa Chelidze for their support and their understanding. Georgian Scientists, historians, students and all readers will have the access to the materials through digital library of the National Parliamentary Library of Georgia.
