<p></p><p>UNESCO Project is the digital collection of the of Georgian classical literature built in 2004 by the National Parliamentary Ilia Chavchavadze Library of Georgia (NPLG - http://www.nplg.gov.ge) together with Library Automation Association in Georgia (LAAG - http://laag.iatp.org.ge) using Greenstone Digital Library software thanks to the UNESCO Moscow Office contract (http://www.unesco.ru/eng/articles/2004/masha08072004150943.php). The contract was initiated by Project Coordinator Ms. Tatyana Murovana, supported by Partnership Project Manager Ms. Tamara Nossenko and signed by Director of the UNESCO Moscow Office Mr. Philippe Queau and Mr. Teimuraz Chkhenkeli – Director of IT Department of the NPLG. In the framework of the contract Mr. Giorgi Varamishvili developed Georgian version of the Greenstone Digital Library Software (http://www.greenstone.org/cgi-bin/library), reflected in (http://greenstone.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Greenstone_language_support) and implemented software of optical character recognition (OCR) for Georgian letters produced by Mr. Zaza Injia (http://www.dachi.com.ge/hawknew.htm), this software and it’s author helped to digitize nine thousand printed pages using five scanners and 22 computers in three months. With the aim of popularization of the Georgian classical literature all over the world metadata are in transliteration system of Georgian alphabet created by Ms. Shukia Apridonidze and Mr. Levan Chkhaidze (http://laag.iatp.org.ge/texts/arten.html), so in the Greenstone’s indexes the authors and the titles are sorted by English alphabet.
