დაიბადა საქართველოში მეცნიერული ქირურგიის ერთ-ერთი ფუძემდებლის, პროფესორ ალექსანდრე მაჭავარიანისა და პირველი ქართველი აგრონომი ქალის, ეკატერინე ჯანდიერის ოჯახში. გიორგი მაჭავარიანი თითქმის ნახევარი საუკუნის მანძილზე მოღვაწეობდა თბილისის სახელმწიფო სამედიცინო ინსტიტუტის სამკურნალო ფაკულტეტის ქირურგიის კათედრაზე. ეწოდა პედაგოგიურ საქმიანობასაც. მედიცინის მეცნიერებათა კანდიდატი (1958), დოცენტი (1976).
