cyclic redundancy check - A number derived from a block of data, and stored or transmitted with the data in order to detect any errors in transmission. It is similar to a checksum, but more complicated.A cyclic redundancy check is often calculated by adding words or bytes of the data. The receiving computer recalculates the CRC from the data received and compares it to the value originally transmitted; if the values are not the same, it indicates a transmission error.
