addressability - The existence of a method to control delivery of services to certain, select subscribers on a system. In the cable industry, this allows an operator to activate, disconnect, or scramble the signal received by a subscriber remotely from the headend. After a subscriber signals the service provider, the provider’s computer addresses the subscriber’s set-top box, temporarily allowing it to descramble the program so that it may be viewed. Any addressable set-top box may be controlled by this method.
