erasable programmable read-only memory - A storage device that uses electrical charges stored in an isolated (floating) metal-oxide semiconductor (MOS) transistor gate to simulate data. Because of the isolation, an EPROM can retain a charge for more than 10 years without an external power supply. An EPROM is programmed when a charge is injected into the floating gate. The floating gate can be discharged when ultraviolet (UV) light is applied through a window in the package. This procedure erases the stored data and prepares the device to be reprogrammed.
