synchronous transmission - A means of sending data in which a clocking signal is used and the characters are separated by time intervals, rather than by start and stop bits as in asynchronous transmission.Synchronous transmission is faster than asynchronous because there is no need for a start bit and stop bit on each character; however, it is more expensive. Most computer terminals use asynchronous data transmission; some modems convert asynchronous signals into synchronous signals for very fast transmission.
