disk - 1. A round flat magnetic data storage device that can be rigid (hard) or flexible (floppy). A magnetized device contained within a hard or diskette drive records and reads the information. A hard drive is the primary permanent storage device in most PCs, while a diskette is the primary portable storage device. Compare to disc.
2. A generic term for a direct-access magnetic storage medium which is rewritable, as opposed to read-only, including floppy disks, hard disks, and Zip disk. Synonymous with magnetic disk. Compare with disc.
3. Note: the american spelling, "disk", is normal for most computer disks whereas "compact disc", having come to computers via the audio world, is correctly spelled with a "c", indeed, this spelling is part of the CD standard.
