bootstrap - A program that causes the first piece of software installed on a computer (usually the operating system) to load when the power is switched on, which enables the CPU to begin executing instructions. The word bootstrap originally referred to a strap or tab attached to the top of a boot to help the wearer pull it on, hence the expression "to pull oneself up by one's bootstraps." In computing, it has spawned boot, reboot, cold boot, warm boot, etc. ;
