browse - 1) To view, or to look over casually searching for something of interest. 2) To look through a library catalog, collection, index, bibliography, or other list of resources in a casual, unsystematic search, for titles of interest. To facilitate browsing, books on the same subject are assigned similar call numbers, which groups them together on the shelf. 3) In information retrieval, a search directed by the user in a dynamic but casual way. A clearly formulated query may serve as the initial method of entry into an index or database, but searches which begin systematically often give way to an exploratory approach. Printed indexes are sometimes more browsable than electronic databases because they allow the user to easily scan the headings and entries which precede and follow the initial point of access. 4) a search for information available on the World Wide Web, conducted in a casual, serendipitous manner. Hypertext is designed to facilitate online browsing by including links to related documents and information (this dictionary is an example). Compare with surf. See also: Web browser. ;
