case - A book cover, usually made by machine, consisting of two boards and a paper hollow, covered in some kind of binding material, usually book cloth. The edition binder submits a specimen case to the publisher for approval showing the size, boards, covering, lettering, and squares. The process of attaching the case to the body of a book is known as casing-in. See also: case binding and recase.
Also refers to a container used by a typesetter to hold movable type. The words uppercase and lowercase are derived from the relative positions of the compartments used to store the two kinds of type.
