European Travelers in the East
 05/02/2026

An exhibition detailing the extraordinary journeys of European explorers to Eastern lands has officially opened at the Book Museum of the National Library of Georgia.

This temporary exposition, integrated into the museum's permanent display, features rare 19th-century editions published in various European languages. These volumes are sourced from the Rare Editions Collection of the National Library.

The transit routes of European travelers often passed through Georgia, a fact highlighted in several featured works. A notable example is the 1817 publication by Freygang, titled "Letters from the Caucasus and Georgia," which provides a dedicated account of the region.

The collection includes narratives of travels through Turkey, Syria, Egypt, Kabul, Korea, and other Eastern destinations. Visitors will be particularly drawn to the intricate illustrations and hand-colored engravings that accompany the texts. The vibrant, traditional colors of the East have been remarkably preserved in these high-quality polygraphic works, adding a striking visual dimension to the display. The exhibition also features historical maps tracing the exact routes taken by the authors.

In addition to this temporary exhibition, visitors to the Book Museum can explore the permanent collection, which includes the first Georgian printed books, editions from King Vakhtang VI’s printing house, Ilia Chavchavadze’s personal library, and a unique collection of "The Knight in the Panther's Skin."
