New Way for Books through Renovated Library
 30/09/2019

On 30 September at 16:00, the Center of Registration of Printed and Digital Editions opened in the renovated first building of the National Parliamentary Library of Georgia (5 Gudiashvili Street).

The center houses the National Library Divisions of Acquisitions; Classification and Cataloging; Library Collections and Catalogs Sorting and Protection; ISBN ISMN ISSN. A long-time dream has come true and now the process of registration and sorting of library items are performed in one space.

Back in 1931, when the reorganized Georgian State Public Library opened in this historic building, the legendary director of the library, Giorgi Gekhtman, was planning to arrange the process of book registration and sorting, so-called "Book Road", in one space. This request was ignored by the Soviet government. There was even an altercation between Gekhtman and the then Minister of Education (Gekhtman demanded that the library be opened to readers only after final organization of the bookstore and so-called "Book Road"), as a consequence, Gekhtman was dismissed. Finally, this plan failed even though the library was expanded several times. According to Gekhtman, the library acquisition and book sorting center should be located in the separate wing of the first building, with a separate entrance that would isolate these two processes of reader service and book registration and further processing from each other.

At present, this part of the building has been restored to its original form and the Gekhtman’s plan has been implemented. The novelty is that the mosaic of the foyer floor is a replica of the floor fragments of Ishkhani Temple in Tao-Klarjeti (present-day Turkey).

On the foyer walls are exhibited the works of the contest participants, including the original project of the building. There are also photos showing the current state of the floor of the Ishkhani Monastery. These materials were provided by Irine Giviashvili, an art historian, and Nino Bagrationi, a researcher, Buba Kudava, a historian, and Shalva Lezjava, a photographer.

The project was implemented with the support of  the restoration experts of the National Agency for Cultural Heritage Preservation of Georgia: Nana Kuprashvili, Niko Zazunishvili, Joni Akhobadze, Levan Qerdikoshvili and Iuri Donadze. But for their help the project would not have been successful. The replica of the floor is made by the artist-moisaicist Mzia Svianadze.

Wall paintings were restored by painters Vakhtang Megrelishvili and Valeri Mikava. The restoration of doors and windows is by Nodar Khatiashvili. LTD “PaliGeorgia” (head-Zaza Sagrishvili) carried out decorating works.
