Secretary General of the Dante Alighieri Society Visits the National Library
 15/06/2026

On June 15, Alessandro Masi, Secretary General of the Dante Alighieri Society, visited the National Library of Georgia and met with General Director Konstantine Gamsakhurdia. The visit marked the 20th anniversary of the Dante Alighieri Society's Tbilisi Committee.

Professor Masi’s visit focused on exploring the legacy of classical Georgian writer Konstantin Gamsakhurdia—the first to translate Dante's Divine Comedy into Georgian verse—and examining the library's sole Gutenberg-era incunabulum: a rare 1481 edition of Dante's poem illustrated by Sandro Botticelli. The Secretary General also viewed the 1629 Georgian-Italian dictionary and Italian translations of The Knight in the Panther's Skin.

General Director Konstantine Gamsakhurdia highlighted the deep cultural bonds between the nations, noting that the library holds three poetic translations of Dante, and hosts the only bust of the Italian poet in Georgia.

In recognition of the National Library's dedication to popularizing Italian literature, Alessandro Masi presented Konstantine Gamsakhurdia with a Special Diploma of Honor before laying flowers at Dante’s bust.
