Pictorial Enamel – its Technique and Technology

Pictorial enamel is one of the types of artistic enamel which appeared for the first time in the late 15th century in the southern part of France, the city of Limoges. In the late 17th century and at the beginning of the 18th century it was widely produced in Russia. Interesting samples of pictorial enamel of this period are saved and exhibited in the funds and depositories of the State Museum of Arts of Georgia.

Despite the fact that this type of art appears in the centuries-old history of artistic enamel late of all it is not created by imitation of any technique. On the contrary, it is an absolutely new and original discovery. Its principal merit is that it represents a thinnest miniature made in the most complex technique. Miniatures made in enamel enslave us with their diverse colour gamma and surprisingly vivid hues which glimmer unusually at the bright sunshine. But above all, we must not forget about their special subtlety – an incautious movement, blow, fall and a miniature will be cracked or just a base of the metal and remains of enamel are left in our hands which are not subject to restoration. This may be the reason that so few old miniatures made in enamel have reached us.
