The Setting
Discussions of the complicated settings of the Caucasus and its nations involve geography, history, ethnicities and a host of other topics. Some topics, such as the unfolding of the Bolshevik Revolution in Georgia, are obscure; others, such as the development of Christianity in Georgia, are easier to trace. Recurring themes about the settings in which the story of the Chavchavadze family is told include trade routes from East to West and North to South; political and religious rivalries; invasions from all directions; and the inability of Georgia to achieve national unity.
