Сhampagne reinette
The apples of Champagne reinette are know in Georgia under the name of „Brotski“ – the paper-white. Of all the foreign sorts it is the most largely distributed in the horticultural districts of Georgia. Old plantations of Champagne reinette are found especially in Karthalinia, while in other regions. It has a prevailing importance over all the other foreign sorts.
In many new orchards of the commercially growing districts Champagne reinette makes up to 50% and in the average for all the new plantations 35–40%. It gives its best product in high Karthalinia and South-Ossetia.
The fruit is of medium size, flat, sometimes round flattened, often ribbed, of a very handsome appearance.
Skin smooth, when fully ripe pale straw yellow or waxen-white in colour, oily, often blushed on the sunny side.
Fruits keep till late in spring, and under conditions of temperature +20, +30 and relative humidity not higher than 75% do not fall under the average quality of the sort, which cannot be put in the number of firstrate.
Blooming is late and protracted; flowers cold resistant, selfsteril; successfully pollinated by Orleans reinette and Bellefleur. A long vegetative period is characteristic for the tree, which accordingly is not hardy to cold, Bearing early ( 4-5 years old) At the age of 8-10 years becomes a heavy producer, though yielding periodically.
The economical merits of this sort, early bearing, handsomely coloured fruits, abundant productivity, relatively high resistance to fungus diseases and unrequisitiveness to environment give Champagne reinette the importance of a largely commercial sort.
