White winter Calville

White winter Calville is one of the foreign sorts introduced during the first half of the XIX century. In old Georgian horticultural plantations it is represented by single trees, whilst in new plantations it is prohibited, not being inserted in the commercial assortment register for Georgia.

The limited extension of winter white Calville is easily explained by the peculiarities of the sort itself, it is very requisitive to environment and agricultural engineering. It grows well only on the best and richest soils of the moderate zone, the least excess of humidity in the air or moisture in the soil impairing greatly the quality of the product, as well as the viability of the tree. Productivity is low and always periodical; susceptibility to fungus diseases is very big.

The fruit is excellent in flavor, very attractive in shape and colour, pleasantly aromatic; keeping qualities are very good: fruits keep till Summer without losing their flavour.

White Winter Calville succeeds best of all on dwarf stock, producing in this case very large and showy fruits. It is one of the best amateur sorts for shaping.
