Duchess of Sukhumi

Duchess of Sukhumi - this oear varietie is common in Abkhasia. It has probably been introduced from Crimea. While other valuable sorts of pears under conditions of excessive humidity decline, suffer from fungus diseases and produce quite unsatisfactory fruits, Duchess of Sukhumi thrives comparatively well in Abkhasia and even in the zone of heavy rainfall of Western Georgia.

The high quality of fruit, late bearing but abundant fruiting, resistance to fungus diseases make this sort desirable in the commercial assortment for Abkhasia and the Black sea coast regions.

Fruit

Fruit of medium size, seldom small, oblong-rounded in shape; skin greenish, covered with a fine waxen bloom, when fully ripe yellowish in colour. The surface is abundantly covered with spots of russet what greatly impaires the appearance of the fruit and makes it unattractive.

Flesh yellowish white, melting, juicy, not astringent, slightly acid.

Its flavour makes Duchess of Sokhumi fall into the class of second rate summer sorts, as its pears ripen in the second half of August.

Tree

The tree is rather vigorous in growth, bears late, but is a heavy producer.
