Kalakura legvi
The sort Kalakura is one of the best figs existing in Kakhetia. Its origin remains unknown.
This interesting sort is distributed in low Kakhetia, especially in the Bakurtzikhe district, where it occupies 40-45% of all the acreage under fig plantations.
Kalakura is requisititive to environment in the sense that it requires a long vegetation period with a high sum of temperature, at the same time not standing high of absolute temperature.
Tree
Its growth is vigorous; generally it grows in the form of a tree but sometimes also of a bush.
Branches strong, dense, sinuous, intricate.
Top of an indefinite shape, high-topped, spreading or drooping.
The tree is rather longliving and cjld resistant; temperature of -14° -16° slightly injures only the terminal buds and the tops of one year shoots.
Leaf very large, 23-28 cv., fivelobed, the sinuosities being so shallow as to be covered with the superposed lobes, becaude of what it seems entre; superfichies rough, uneven, darkgreen; petiole long.
Fruit
Kalakura gives only one summer crop yearly.
The blossom clusters consist mainly of normal female flowers, among whith male flowers are scattered.
In order to get mature the fruits require caprification.
Fruit medium in size, oval-spheric in shape, with a think short stem.
Skin greenish-yellow, when fully ripe straw-yellow, readily separating from the pulp.
The regularly ripened fruit is tender, fieshy, juicy.
At full maturity a drop of sweet stuff comes out the eye.
Pulp very sugary with a white, dense, mealy mass.
For drying, ripe fruits freshly picked from the tree are best.
In Kakhetia the best quality of dried figs known in the commerce under the name of Bakurtzikhe dried figs, is prepared precisely of this sort.
Good flavor of the fruits, their medium size, compactness of the pulp ands its aroma give Kalakura legvi the importance of a firstrate sort.
Accordingly, it must take the first place in the commercial assortment for low Kakhetia.
