Winter Nelis

In Georgia, particularly in Abkhasia, Winter Nelis is known under the name of Black Alaghiri. This sort comes from Belgium, where it was originated by Nelis from a seed, the seeding receiving its originator’s name.

Winter Nelis is common in Europe and America. In USSR it is met in the North Caucasus (Alaghiri in the vicinity of the t. Ordjonikidze).

In Georgia it is represented by single trees.

The fruit of Winter Nelis is medium in size, 50-70 mm., very much variable in shape, though mostly pyriform.

Calix open, sitting in a rather deep and wide cavity.

Stem medium in length, slight curved, sometimes straight, sitting in a shallow, knobby pit. Skin thin, at picking maturity green in colour, when ready for use becomes slightly yellowish, covered with spots and dots of russet, sometimes russeting all over.

Flesh yellowish-white, melting, very juicy, sweetish acid, pleasant in flavor.

Flower of Winter Nelis

Is ready for use in December-January.

Tree growing weakly, with a drooping top of indefinite shape and thin branches.

Starts vegetation late, is sufficiently cold-resistant, greatly requisitive to soil, bearing early, highly productive, blooming late, flowers self-sterile, though pollen active, perfectly pollinating other sorts of pears.

Winter Nelis is very much subjected to scab.

It does not succeed on the quince.

Requires highly fertile soil.

In Georgia Winter Nelis has certainly only the importance of an amateur sort.
